Summer Hair Care: Protecting Your Locks from Sun, Chlorine, and Salt Water

Updated: Jul 22

As the summer sun beckons, it's time to embrace outdoor fun, pool dips, and beach waves. But with all that fun comes the challenge of keeping your hair healthy amidst the harsh summer elements. Here’s how to take care of your hair in the summer, ensuring it stays vibrant and damage-free despite the sun, chlorine, and salt water.

1. Shield from Sun Damage

The sun’s UV rays can wreak havoc on your hair, leading to dryness, discoloration, and split ends. To protect your hair, wear a wide-brimmed hat or use a UV-protectant spray. Look for hair products specifically formulated with SPF to guard your locks against harmful rays.

2. Combat Chlorine Damage

Chlorine in pools can strip your hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry and brittle. To prevent this, rinse your hair with fresh water before swimming to reduce chlorine absorption. After swimming, use a clarifying shampoo to remove any residual chlorine and follow up with a deep conditioning treatment to restore moisture.

3. Handle Salt Water Exposure

While a dip in the ocean is refreshing, salt water can leave your hair tangled and dehydrated. Before heading to the beach, apply a leave-in conditioner to create a protective barrier. Post-swim, rinse your hair with fresh water and use a hydrating mask to replenish lost moisture.

4. Hydrate and Moisturize

Keeping your hair hydrated is crucial in the summer. Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner designed to lock in hydration. Incorporate a weekly deep conditioning treatment or hair mask to maintain moisture levels and repair any damage caused by the sun, chlorine, and salt water.

5. Trim and Protect

Regular trims help to eliminate split ends and keep your hair looking healthy. Additionally, avoid using heat-styling tools as much as possible, as they can exacerbate sun damage. If you must use heat, apply a heat protectant spray beforehand to minimize damage.

By following these tips on how to take care of your hair in the summer, you can enjoy the sunny season without compromising your hair’s health and beauty.
